Profanation/Sanctification and the Past, Present and Future of Israel in the Book of Ezekiel

It is well known that the book of Ezekiel is replete with the vocabulary of holy and profane on the one hand, and contains several retellings of the history of Israel on the other hand. It is the purpose of this study to examine the relationship between these two aspects. It is argued that Israel’s past is characterized as a history of profanation of what pertains to God, its present exilic condition is depicted as a state of profanation, and its future is portrayed as a result of God’s sanctification. It is also noted that this understanding of Israel’s history reveals the ambivalent character of the (experience of) exile.
